Dr. J. Steven Smith, Dr. Jennifer Smith Ellis
Dr. J. Steven Smith graduated from Baylor University in 1976 with a degree in Biology. In 1979 he graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Masters of Science degree and went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas in 1983. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Equilibration Society, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.
He began his general dental practice in 1983 in Bozeman. His areas of interest and expertise include bite splint therapy and its relationship to restorative dentistry, complex interdisciplinary dental reconstruction and exquisite conservative cast gold restorations, aesthetic dentistry, and implants.
Dr. Smith has been a visiting faculty member of the, L. D. Pankey Institute, the premier post graduate dental education institute in the world, since 1999. He has the opportunity to teach advanced dental techniques to dentists from all over the world. He also lectures throughout the country on staging and sequencing complex cases.
Dr. Smith believes in the importance of life-long learning. He is a member of many technical study clubs:
- Northern Lights Pankey Faculty Study Club since 2004
- RAG Tanner Appliance Study Club - 2002-2012
- Yellowstone Cast Gold Study Club since 2003
- Blue Ribbon Dental Seminars since 2000
- Corp of Discovery Study Club since 2000
- He has participated in two international dental / medical mission trips in Romania and the Philippines
- He facilitates two Tanner Appliance study clubs in MT, one national and one regional
- He presented to the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry in Chicago, The Hinman Dental Society in Atlanta, Georgia, and numerous study clubs across the United States
He and his wife Becky have been married since 1976 and they have four daughters, three sons-in-law, a 6 year old grandson and a 3 year old granddaughter. He is an avid fisherman, skier, golfer, scuba diver, and a former glider pilot. He loves to travel for adventure, to see his daughters, family and friends. He and his family have been members of Bozeman United Methodist Church since 1983. Becky received her doctorate from Montana State University and founded Blue Ocean Innovation Center.
Dr. Smith is expanding his practice and is excited to welcome his daughter, Jennifer Smith Ellis, DDS.
Dr. Jennifer Ellis was raised in Bozeman since the age of four. She has always been extremely competitive with all sports and loved growing up on the ski hill. She graduated from Bozeman High as three sport athlete and continued on with a softball scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. There she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology in 2002. She decided to stay in Indiana and attend Indiana University School of Dentistry in Indianapolis. She has been practicing dentistry in Indianapolis since 2008. She is member of the American Dental Association, Indiana State and District Dental Association and soon to be Montana State and District Dental Association.
Dr. Ellis has a constant love for the profession and continued learning. She is part of several Pankey and Tanner Study clubs all over the U.S. including Bozeman, Montana; Jackson, Michigan and Baltimore, Maryland. She has finished the first course at the Pankey Institute where she was able to adapt to a comprehensive advanced approach to dentistry and looks forward to continuing on at the Institute. Her father, Dr. Smith, is visiting faculty at the Pankey Institute and will be a great mentor for her to continue on her journey in this wonderful profession.
Dr. Ellis just recently got married here in Bozeman to Ethan Ellis. She and her husband just relocated back to Bozeman in October and are looking forward to starting their life here together. They enjoy any outdoor activities and look forward to their first winter on the ski hill. They are both Indiana University grads and will bleed cream and crimson as die hard Hoosier fans. She is looking forward to getting back into the softball community and helping the youth with pitching and hitting.
