Dr. Jennifer Smith Ellis explains the importance of treating gum disease

SIGNS OF GUM DISEASE

Some of the common signs and symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Chronic bad breath
  • Gum recession
  • Loose teeth
  • Deep pockets forming around the teeth
  • Swollen and red gums
  • Tooth or gum sensitivity

GUM DISEASE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Our doctors use the DenMat SL3 diode laser to perform laser gum surgery. This is a minimally-invasive procedure that has proven to be very effective for treating patients with moderate to severe gum disease. We also offer non-surgical scaling and root planing treatments at our practice where we clean out the pockets and remove plaque and tartar buildup that is pushing the gums away from the root of the tooth. Once this debris and infection are cleared, the gums heal and reattach to the teeth. Pocket depth is improved over time and this continues to be a popular treatment with a high success rate.

AFTER GUM DISEASE TREATMENT

Periodontal maintenance is part of the complete treatment plan for gum disease. We need you to commit to coming in for deep cleanings and checkups at least once every 3 to 4 months instead of once every 6 months to ensure the infection is kept at bay. Deep cleanings will help us remove any plaque buildup and tartar that can trigger an infection. This also gives us a chance to monitor your progress.
